OpenAI Purchases Chat.com Domain for Over $15 Million 🌐

OpenAI has confirmed the acquisition of the domain Chat.com, previously owned by HubSpot's co-founder and CTO, Dharmesh Shah.

Details:

• Last year, HubSpot co-founder and CTO Dharmesh Shah acquired Chat.com for $15.5 million, ranking it among the top two all-time publicly reported domain sales.

• Last March, Shah announced he’d sold Chat.com to an unnamed buyer, confirming that he sold the domain for more than he originally paid for it.

• On Wednesday, he confirmed on X that OpenAI was the buyer, implying he was paid in OpenAI shares. The same day, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted the URL chat.com on X, which automatically redirects to ChatGPT.

Chat.com was one of the first domains registered on the internet, registered in 1996. The change is already active, although it doesn’t appear that OpenAI plans to change the name of ChatGPT or fully migrate the original domain to Chat.com.

TriStar Pictures has released Here, directed by Robert Zemeckis, starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. This $50 million film uses generative AI to transform the actors' appearances across 60 years, marking a milestone in Hollywood's use of AI-driven visual effects.

Details:

• The film employs real-time generative AI from Metaphysic to modify the actors' faces, allowing them to portray characters at various ages without traditional CGI.

• During filming, the crew used dual monitors to view both the actors' real appearances and their AI-modified versions, enabling instant transformations.

• Metaphysic's system was trained using extensive data from Hanks' and Wright's past films, capturing facial movements and skin textures under different conditions.

• This AI approach eliminates the need for extensive post-production work, reducing costs and time compared to traditional methods.

"Here" showcases AI's potential in filmmaking and isn't the first film to use AI for de-aging. In 2023's Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, ILM used Flux and infrared cameras to capture Harrison Ford's facial data and de-age him in postproduction.
